Bicycles and nostalgic memories

I recently captured poignant photographs from my apartment. These abandoned bicycles, left in the basement near the elevator, are part of my daily view—whether heading out or returning home. Each time I see them, they stir up a wave of nostalgia, transporting me back to my childhood. Bicycle riding memories flood my mind, taking me back to a time when owning one seemed like a far-off dream—a luxury that not every child had the chance to experience. Even the chance to ride one seemed out of reach.

Those times were challenging and often disheartening, yet they shaped us, teaching us to cherish even the simplest joys. Bicycles and nostalgic memories hold a special place in my heart, representing not just a means of transport but a gateway to adventure, freedom, and shared moments of joy.

Owning a bicycle wasn’t just a desire; for me, it was an unattainable dream. Thankfully, a cycle rental shop was conveniently located just 2-3 minutes from my home. My friends and I would pool our money to rent bicycles and teach ourselves how to ride. The shop charged₹1-2 for a small bicycle and₹4-5 for a larger one for half an hour. The bicycles ranged in condition—some were well-maintained, while others had issues like faulty brakes or slipping chains. The shop operated from 9 AM to 1 PM and again from 3 PM to 6 PM. We would eagerly gather in front of the shop well before it opened, hoping to grab a bicycle in good condition.

Childhood dreams and bicycle riding memories

Those days were filled with excitement, fun, and a fair share of chaos. While learning to ride a bicycle, it was common to hurt my hands and legs from frequent falls caused by losing balance. Whenever I rented a cycle from the shop, I’d head straight to a nearby ground, park it there, and begin adjusting the brake system, chain tension, and handle alignment. Once everything was in order, I’d ride with pride, feeling accomplished. Bicycles and nostalgic memories from those times remain vivid in my mind. Back then, the cycles we rode proudly bore iconic names like Hero, Jyothi, and Hercules.

Sometimes the cycles we rented were in terrible condition. I still remember one evening when I was riding on the main road at a normal speed. Two middle-aged men were walking ahead of me, and suddenly, I lost control. To make matters worse, the brakes were in such poor shape that I couldn’t stop in time and accidentally hit one of them. Thankfully, the man was someone I knew, and it happened right in front of my house.

Embracing the Magic of Rainy Bicycle Adventure Memories

Rainy seasons were truly magical for us, especially when it came to cycling in the rain. Our favorite joy was parking our bicycles in a line over a puddle, spinning the pedals by hand, and seeing whose wheel could splash water the farthest. Sometimes, we’d ride with one hand holding an umbrella and the other firmly on the handlebar, making every ride an unforgettable adventure and fun-filled memories. Even though I never had my own bicycle, I had a lot of fun riding these rented ones. Reflections on childhood and the timeless joy of bicycles now come rushing back, as these almost abandoned bicycles stand as silent reminders of those bittersweet memories, evoking both a sense of longing and a deep appreciation for the journey we’ve come through.

Outdoor Play to Virtual Experiences

The cycle of generations has shifted significantly over the years. Today, instead of enjoying activities like cycling outdoors, kids are more drawn to virtual experiences. Many prefer playing games or engaging in entertainment on their mobile devices, spending a lot of time indoors. It’s becoming increasingly rare to see children playing outside on the ground. The outdoors, once a playground for creativity and physical activity, seems to have been replaced by the screens of mobile phones. This shift highlights how modern technology, while offering entertainment and convenience, has altered the way children spend their time and interact with the world around them. Bicycle riding memories now feel like a distant part of childhood, replaced by new forms of entertainment.
